Before the tribes and cats came here, the island had cats filled with loners. The loners were primitive. They didn't know much about medicine or how to use it. The only cat who had some knowledge of it was Lonna. Lonna was like a "nurse". She had a den in the middle of the forest, cats would come from miles around to be treated.
One day while Lonna was waking up, the air smelled different. The crawled out of her den and began to walk around. The way the air smelled was hard to describe. It was of carrion and a metalic smell... At first, she thought it was natural, so Lonna continued on with her day.
The next day, the smell was stronger. As soon as she walked out of her den, a dead quetzal lay in front of her paws. Its eyes were milky white and its body had lost all its feathers, and its skin was black. It was an eerie site, and Lonna was shaken. She raced back inside her den. The next day, no birds chirped. Slowly, she crawled out of her den.
"Help....... please....... help me.........."
Lonna whipped her head around, and she saw a cat. He had no fur at all, every part of his skin was dark black. His gums were yellow and had no teeth. His eyes, almost white. A horrible stench came off of him. Lonna yowled, and ran away as fast as she could. She ran, as she saw cats all looking like the bird. Some of them were dead.
Lonna ran all the way to the Hidden Pool. She looked out from the cliff it was on. The ocean was beautiful. But Lonna needed to find a way to escape before she was like these cats. Lonna looked at her paws. She spotted that she had a bald spot on her right paw. Her skin was black. Lonna yowled, she was so distirbed she fell into the pool. The pools water rushed down her throat as she struggled to swim back to the edge. She was wet, and cold. Lonna felt there was no escape to this sickness. She named it, the Black sickness.
Lonna slept, cold and wet, ready to die. She had given up hope. She woke up,and glanced at her paw. Lonna's eyes were wide with suprise, the blad spot on her paw was no longer black! She looked at the pool.
"You are the cure" she whispered to it.
Lonna knew she was cured, so she raced down the cliff to the beach. She avoided any contact with the cats. She came to a spot where she could see the main land. During low tide, she crossed the sandbars to main land. She looked back, never to return.
Only the Tribes medicine cat knows of this secret. How was the Black Sickness made, spread? Some think demons. Others think bad fortune.
Could this be tied to the mystery of the jungle?
As I looked everywhere, sick cats all pleading for help
I could not...
I would be them too
And as I ran
I heard a cackle of laughter
And a pair of eyes glaring at me'
For I was sure
This was
A demons doing.
